How to Make Your Floors Last a Lifetime: Simple Care Tips from RusCan Flooring
Your floors go through a lot — daily foot traffic, spills, pets, furniture, and Canada’s notorious humidity swings. The good news? With just a few simple habits, you can keep them looking beautiful for decades. Here’s what our team at RusCan Flooring recommends for each flooring type.
Solid and engineered hardwood are stunning — but they do need a little love. Sweep or dry-mop daily to prevent dirt and grit from scratching the surface. When cleaning, avoid excess water: wood and moisture are not friends. A lightly dampened cloth for spot cleaning is fine, but never wet-mop a hardwood floor. One often-overlooked tip: place felt pads under the legs of all your furniture. Chairs, tables, sofas — all of them. Dragging furniture across hardwood is one of the most common causes of surface damage, and felt pads cost almost nothing.
LVP is one of the most durable and low-maintenance floors on the market — but “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” The key rule: wipe up spills immediately. Even though LVP is 100% waterproof, letting liquid sit can seep under the planks over time. For regular cleaning, a damp mop works perfectly. Just make sure to avoid abrasive cleaners or anything with harsh chemicals — they can dull the surface finish over time and void your warranty.
Laminate and moisture are not a great combination. Keep it as dry as possible — vacuum or dry-sweep regularly to remove debris, and when you do mop, use a laminate-specific cleaner and a well-wrung mop. Standing water is laminate’s biggest enemy, so address any spills quickly. The good news: laminate is extremely scratch-resistant, so day-to-day wear is rarely an issue.
One Pro Tip That Works for Every Floor
Place area rugs in your highest-traffic zones — entryways, hallways, in front of the kitchen sink. Rugs absorb the brunt of daily wear and protect the finish underneath. They’re also easy to replace when worn out, which is a lot cheaper than refinishing or replacing your floors.
